    Homophobic slurs and public apologies: the discursive struggle over fag/maricón in public discourse

    A handful of recent incidents hints at an ideological struggle over the use of the English word fag(got) and the Spanish word maricón in public discourse. This article examines the discursive and ideological struggle over the terms through the comparison of two cases in which Spanish/English bilingual Latinos in the U. S. use what might be considered homophobic slurs in public discourse in two distinct contexts — an informal, off-record sports-related press conference and a radio talk show political interview. The three main aims of the article are to examine and compare the content and context of the two public apologies, to examine the discursive and ideological struggle over the appropriateness of fag/maricón in public discourse through the evaluation of their use, and to contextualize the two case studies within the research on the construction of homophobia in discourse

    The study is about a critical analysis of a political discourse. Using Megawati’s opening speech in the Fourth Congress of the PDIP, I want to find out the ideological model context used by the text producer and the social structure influencing the speech. Using the critical discourse analysis approach of van Dijk, the finding shows that Megawati uses ideological values of Soekarno’s leadership concept to indoctrinate the audience. The concept is also used to tease the current President Joko Widodo

    Joanne Larson and Shira May Peterson highlight the paucity of research on how talk is used in pre-school settings compared to school settings. They locate the wealth of research studies on talk and discourse in formal learning settings in terms of the different ideological positions adopted. They use two continua; Streets (1995) distinction between ideological and autonomous conceptions of literacy and whether the function of literacy is seen as fixed or fluid to separate the studies into four quadrants, each with a distinctive ideological base. This means that their analysis does not highlight the groundbreaking impact of individual studies, but it does illustrate very effectively how ideological assumptions shape both research design and the resulting recommendations for practice. It also highlights some key research problems: that ideological rigidity means researchers can miss opportunities to build on each others' findings

    The media, a controlling discourse, is presupposed to perform social power of groups that have ability to control the minds of other groups. The practice of this mind control involves more than acquiring beliefs. It encapsulates such specific and/or social dominance and hegemony of scarce social resource like “language” and “culture” (See Van Dijk in Schiffrin, 2001). Since mind control employs the acts, it is argued that Sundaneses’ attitude to their language and culture may be deconstructed by exercising persuasive power of narrator and media based on knowledge, information, and authority. In Rosidi’s article, Urang Sunda di Lingkungan Indonesia, the practice of ideological-hegemony deconstruction itself is conducted concerning to the fact that many Sundaneses become ignorant society. At this point, the paper intends to the research focusing on how such discourse controls mind and action of less powerful groups. Theoretically, recipients tend to accept beliefs, knowledge, and opinion through discourse from what they see as authoritative, trustworthy, and credible sources such as scholars, or reliable media (Nesler et al, 1993). The issue arises out of such particular strategies and function of the structure used in controlling mind. To learn the issue, critical discourse analysis is used. In this study, it is argued that deconstruction of ideological hegemony is executed by providing linguistic structure and communicative events formed by context-social structure and personal and social cognition

    ‘In the name of capability’: a critical discursive evaluation of competency-based management development

    This paper illustrates a number of ways in which competency or capability-based management development (CBMD) can work simultaneously both for and against the interests of organizational agents. It does so by demonstrating how CBMD might usefully be understood as both ideological and quasi-religiously faith-based. These features are shown to provide opportunities for resistance and micro-emancipation alongside those for repression and subordination. The study employs a combination of ‘middle range’ discourse analytical techniques. In the first instance, critical discourse analysis is applied to company documentation to distil the ideological stance of an international organization’s CBMD programme. Critical discursive psychology is then used to assess the ways in which employees’ evaluative accounts both support and resist such stance. The analysis builds upon previous insights from Foucauldian studies of CBMD by foregrounding processes of discursive agency. It also renders more visible and discussible the assumptions and dilemmas that CBMD might imply

    Cultural Appropriation and the Limits of Identity: A Case for Multiple Humanity(es)

    examine the dominant conversations on cultural appropriation. The first part of the essay will examine the ideological configuration of what constitutes cultural appropriation (hereafter as CA) first, as the politics of the diaspora and second, within a normative understanding of culture and its diachronic contradictions. This will be followed by a critical reevaluation of our subject theme as primarily a discourse of power with multiple implications. Framed as a discourse of power, CA is equally exposed to ideological distortions, and its critics becoming afflicted with the same virus they set out to cure in the first place. I am interested in the aspect of culture as a constant location of tensions and rupture, yet constitutive of core credential in the making of modern identity. I argue that the failure of dominant criticisms of cultural appropriation is precisely because they do not leave epistemic space for prior commitments: the internal variation of culture. If as critics have argued that CA enables cultural violence, we need to understand the epistemic space where cultural violence occurs in order to make a meaningful proposal for identity discourse and conversation. I will make a case for what may be termed multiple humanity (ies) as a way of transcending the homogenous claims imposed upon cultural memories

    Polarization of coalitions in an agent-based model of political discourse

    Political discourse is the verbal interaction between political actors in a policy domain. This article explains the formation of polarized advocacy or discourse coalitions in this complex phenomenon by presenting a dynamic, stochastic, and discrete agent-based model based on graph theory and local optimization. In a series of thought experiments, actors compute their utility of contributing a specific statement to the discourse by following ideological criteria, preferential attachment, agenda-setting strategies, governmental coherence, or other mechanisms. The evolving macro-level discourse is represented as a dynamic network and evaluated against arguments from the literature on the policy process. A simple combination of four theoretical mechanisms is already able to produce artificial policy debates with theoretically plausible properties. Any sufficiently realistic configuration must entail innovative and path-dependent elements as well as a blend of exogenous preferences and endogenous opinion formation mechanisms

    This study focuses on exploring the ideological influences in literature studies in neoliberal China. The exploration of ideological impacts will be discussed through looking at the theoretical discourse and empirical discourse. The theoretical discourse which will be developed in this study based on the theory of ideology and the theory of neoliberalism. There will be many other theoretical themes discussed in study, but all of them are going to serve the discourse about ideology and neoliberalism. The discourse about the theory of ideology and theory of neoliberalism intends to provide the background and theoretical framework for the empirical discourse. The empirical discourse is concentrated in the literature materials which come from the high school colloquiums in China. Those materials will be provided in different themes, in order to extend the discussions about the existed ideologies in literature studies. Through the empirical discourse about literature studies, study will be able to show various types of different ideological themes and how they work within the context of neoliberal China after economic reform in 1978. Once all sorts of ideological themes in literature studies are depicted, this study will pay attention to the philosophical themes in order to discuss how the philosophical themes influence the society and individuals in their everyday lives. Those philosophical discussions will be derived from the empirical discourse which is concentrated in literature studies
